I recently replaced the tensioner seal and o-ring after noticing oil on the timing cover dripping down to the ground. It’s hard to pinpoint the leak, but it is a likely spot, easy to do and the parts are cheap. I found the seal looked good but there is no telling if it was still sealing. The o-ring on the other hand was seriously flattened and could be mistaken for a flat washer. It was also hardened, so that was likely the source of the leak but I would still do both while I was at it. The leak was cured but the moral of the story is to change the seal and o-ring on older cars (all of our 9-5s at this point) to avoid having the job of cleaning oil off everything in the area and leaving oil spots on the ground. This was a 2009 with about 105,000 miles. I recently did the oil pump o-ring and crankshaft seal for good measure but I can’t be sure if they leaked at all due to the oil flow from above. The o-ring was intact and not hardened so it was probably doing it’s job.
