I don’t think there is a 9-5 that does not have a cracking seal where the cowl cover hits the windshield. Eventually they shed pieces every time you wash the car and let any debris from the windshield go down into the cowl area. The cowl cover has been unavailable for years and who would want to pay $100 for one that will be just as bad as the old one in a few years. I found some t-shaped seal on eBay that comes with an adhesive strip applied to the seal and a peel-off paper to stick it to the underside of the cowl cover. I think the result looks as good as new and the seal looks like it may last. The hardest part is removing pieces of the old seal glued to the underside of the cowl cover. I used a small knife but it is tedious work because the edge of the cowl is very thin and is easily broken. Of course you will need to have a wiper arm puller to get them off and remember to pull the cowl cover towards the front of the car to avoid breaking the clips that hold it to the windshield after you pull up the firewall gasket. You will probably want to clean out the cowl while you are at it as it is usually full of debris that can get sucked in by the fan. The wiper transmission comes off easily with a couple of screws and one plug to make it easier to clean out the cowl. Lubricate the wiper transmission while you are at it with some water-resistant spray lubricant like you might use on the door hinges. The results look good and may outlast the original. Now I am going to try some Wurth rubber conditioner on the plastic cowl cover to see if I can make the plastic look less sun bleached. Interestingly, the rubber seal on the plastic blower motor cover, which is easily removed to clean that area, is as pliable as new. If only they had used the same material on the cowl cover. The replacement seal is very cheap so the price of this job is mainly in your time.
