Hi Ko,
In my case with a TCM from a 2004 going into a 2003 it was simply plug in then running the adaptation procedure from WIS. I intended to compare the software versions between 2003 and 2004 TCM but forgot (doing that will require a Tech 2). Putting a 2003 or newer TCM into a 2002 or earlier is likely to be more difficult because it will be expecting to see paddle shifters.
Driving the car for another day, the 2->1 downshift could be smoother, but I don't recall what it was like before and overall not a problem. All other engagements and upshifts/downshifts are as good as can be expected.
Having a Tech 2 was helpful in diagnosis, but a good multimeter and some understanding of the transmission is more important. A web search for "sonnax AW 55-50SN / AF 23-33" returns a valve body diagnosis guide that helped explain operation of the linear solenoids beyond what WIS provided.
