Last resort before removing the fuel line: I threaded a 6mmx1.0 tap into the tube, after applying Kroil liberally. The threads caught about 3cm in. Once the tap bottomed out on the connector shoulder, slow and careful turning, with frequent backing out to check for damage/progress and re-lube the tap, and the threads forced the tube to back out of the connector. The process took about an hour. There is a large rust spot on the broken filter tube, which is probably the cause of the problem.
Installing the new filter took five minutes. Started her up and no fuel leaks. Here's a photo of the broken part and the tools that ultimately succeeded.
