Hello,
Technically the axle should push out of the wheel hub. But in reality in the rust belt they are often seized in there. So first spray some sort of penetrating oil on the part of the splines you can see. A hammer can work but can damage the threads on the end of the cv. Yes there is a regular special tool that uses 3 wheel bolts to hold it to the hub and has a forcing screw that pushes against the end of the axle. Search up front wheel hub puller. And use it only as a last resort because it may remove the hub from the wheel bearing. Then you need to replace the wheel bearing/hub assembly. And you don't need to remove the ball joint but I like to remove the caliper and unclip the speed sensor wiring as much as you can so you do not stress them when you get to the point of removing the axle/cv from the hub.
So I would spray it a lot and use a punch in the center of the axle with the hammer. I often use a big brass hammer or an air hammer to get it loose but you might not have those options. So a punch should work or put the nut on the end of the axle about level so that the threads have less chance of mushrooming and smack it with a hammer. But don't do that alot. There are ways to fix the those threads but they are not fun. Once it starts moving the punch will push it through. Good Luck, Bernie
