I have had to do a couple of hub bearing replacements, so very similar to what you're doing. I found that starting with the hub nut before removing the shock is a good idea. That way, I could unscrew the hub nut so it was even with the end of the shaft, braced a short hard wood 4x4 (grain end) against the nut, and hit with a large sledgehammer. You have to be careful to hit the block square, and properly support it, but this hasn't failed to break the CV loose from the hub for me yet (live in Michigan, so familiar with rust).
