Fred:
There is sort of a cap at the top of the door plug that should be pushed up to release the plug, probably with a flat-bladed screwdriver. Be careful as old plastic becomes brittle. I made the mistake of using contact cleaner on the terminals but there is a silicone seal around the terminals that swells from the solvents. The seal surrounding the terminals can be picked out before you use contact cleaner, or you can just try the mechanical unplugging and plugging to try to clean the contacts. I found the seal worked well and after over 20 years of road salt the terminals were still shiny. But I hate to overlook the simple things so I tried that first before changing the sensor. I think the sensors have a rather long life based on the few mentions of bad sensors on SaabNet, but any sensor can fail eventually. I believe the airbag computer checks the sensor each time the car is started and periodically during running so you should see immediate results if it is a poor contact or when the bad sensor is replaced. I can’t recall exactly, but I seem to recall there are (at least) two part numbers for the sensor and either one should work. The sensor is green and the specimens I have seen are made by Siemens. Let me know if you need any other information as I might be able to save you some learning time or do some research for you as you are working under difficult circumstances. As these sensors rarely fail, I was relatively confident a used part would work, and after all, most of the other parts on the car are over 20 years old.
I hope your wife recovers her health and will be back home soon.
Regards, Paul
