The A/C is very sensitive to over and under charging, which is why the usual advice is to properly evacuate the system and then recharge with the correct weight of refrigerant for your model year (usually 875 or 825g) as a first step. The fact that you state your Indy doesn’t have a/c equipment leads me to think he just topped up with a can of refrigerant like some DYI kits..
Overcharged A/C can damage the compressor, so I would probably start by finding a mechanic with the correct equipment and knowledge to do a proper servicing. They will then be able to tell you if something else is wrong.
