Ditto on the possibility of a damaged compressor. It may have locked up due to an overcharge and the smell was your serpentine belt. (That should be checked!)
What you can do as a quick check of the compressor is with the engine off turn the compressor crankshaft by hand. (Not the pulley, but the front plate of the clutch assembly.) It should turn smoothly without grinding or bad noises.
If it doesn't pass this test you should disconnect the compressor clutch so it doesn't engage. A failing compressor tends to contaminate the AC system with metal debris and you want to minimize that. Standard procedure with that kind of contamination is to replace the condenser, drier, and expansion valve, and flush out the rest of the system along with installing the new compressor.
If the compressor seems to be OK the thing to do is to check system pressures with a manifold gauge set. (Inexpensive gauges for under $40 can be found on Amazon.) You can consult an R134A temperature/pressure chart to see how close you are. There are plenty of instructional videos on youtube showing how to use the gauges. Be sure to wear eye protection when working on AC.
Aside from anything else you probably have a leak. That can be detected with the use of dye or an electronic detector.
