If it is a 2006 or newer, the fuel sensor mounted on the pump can be problematic. Our 2009 would read empty upon filling but then read properly after the fuel level went down a bit. Then after several years the sensor quit for good. There were no baffles in the tank to blame it on. The sensor is the same part as on the NG 9-3, and they have similar problems. The solution is to drop the fuel tank and replace the sensor or the entire pump assembly. Here in PA, a working fuel gauge is required to pass safety inspection so ignoring it is not an option. Per-2006, the pump assembly can be changed through the hole under the back seat without dropping the tank, but the fuel level sensors are more reliable on those pumps and I have never had a problem with that on our pre-2006 9-5s, even with their advanced age.
