I recently took delivery on a U.S.-spec 9-5 Aero with the bi-xenons.
Thanks to this BB, I found out that there is a "European" setting in the Tech II programming for the headlights. I had the car programmed to use that setting.
I imagine that the European cars are set up the same way, but with the additional benefit of having the halogens come on with the bi-xenons during "high beam" operation.
With the DRL fuse inserted, here's how the lights operate on my car:
Switch position....Lights in operation
====================================================================
OFF................Yellow & white parking lights on as DRL; foglights always off
MIDDLE.............Same as OFF, but foglights can be switched on
ON.................Bi-xenons on, foglights can be switched on, but fogs turn off when in "bright"
With the DRL fuse removed, it's the same as above, but when the switch is set to OFF, all the lights are off.
You have a great idea there, to use the halogens as DRLs instead of the bi-xenons, to save wear. I don't think this can be easily accomplished, but if you don't mind using the lower-power white and yellow parking lights as DRLs instead, this can be done with Tech II programming.
Additionally, it'd also be great to also be able to use the halogens as the "follow-me-home" lights, instead of the bi-xenons. From what I understand, the lifetime of the bi-xenon lamps is shortened if you power them up for only short periods of time.
