One of the problems is the automotive reviews and comparisons in most of the "mainstream" magazines. Quirky always comes up, and in the comparison tests, the BMW usually wins in the group of Saab, Volvo, Mercedes, and BMW. They don't really point out that for a comparably equipped car, you have to spend anywhere from $5-10 thousand more. Leather seats, heated seats, trip computer, cruise control, etc.-- The things we take for granted in a Saab are all options on BMW's. I like the fact that you can customize, but when the BMW and Saab start out costing the same before options- I'll take the extra money and be "quirky" My 1996 900SE was the perfect car for me- fast as hell, huge cargo area, and great safety. I compared it to a lot of cars before I bought it, and it had the best blend of the features I was looking for. Two more 9-5's later I am still happy with Saab, and plan on having an Aero or Viggen next.
