Isn't it funny how TG knows more than the factory?

Sorry TG, I just HAD to use that subject line; it was BEGGING me to!
lowbar,
In all seriousness, the US manual recommends an oil which will provide fantastic service. The point is well taken that "all those older Saabs" ran fine with non-syn oil. You may even find someone with over 200k miles on an original, oil-cooled turbo. (Anyone care to speak up now? 200k+ miles on an oil-cooled turbo using dino oil?) If so, I'd love to find out what their OTHER car habits are, 'cuz I can guarantee you it's not just the oil. All the neurosis here about oil is because we want our cars to remain as trouble-free for as long as possible. It took me a long time to understand that regular (preventative?) maintenance it one of the best measures for insuring long car life. That means I can't just wait until something goes wrong before I deal with it (like I used to do). Better oil is simply another step in that direction.
As far as which oil is recommended by Saab, you HAVE to keep in mind that the US Owner's Manual & the factory engineers DON'T AGREE. That's right. Jae's point about CAFE (Corporate Average Fuel Economy) requirements are the reason why the Saab FACTORY fills the car with 0W-40, but why your US MANUAL says to use a lighter weight oil. Nowhere else in the world does Saab make this distinction; it's 0W-40 all-around for everyone but us. And not just for "extreme" conditions, but for everyday driving. As Stephen pointed out, turbo bearings are an extremely harsh environment for oil. Remember that the turbo's going all the time. You can't say, "Today I'm driving without my turbo," 'cuz it's not your choice.
The oil you're using is fine. But how long do you plan on keeping the car? 80k? 120k? Will you trade it off before any "major" problems show up? Or did you buy it as a "keeper"? We bought ours 'cuz my wife told me she wanted something worth keeping; something she could be proud of after 10 or 20 years. A car is NOT an investment (okay, there are a few exceptions), it's a liability. It costs. Purchase, registration, insurance, & maintenance. I DO know that all these costs are less with a well-maintained older car than with a new car purchased evey couple of years. The oil you choose, I believe, will have a measurable long-term impact on the cost of keeping your car.
