As promised, this is a repost from the 9000 Bulletin Board from Thursday, January 9, 2003. The answers that I got might be a bit biased due to where I posted the initial message.
I have owned my 1983 SAAB 900S for the last 17+ years, and have been a contributor on the C900 board since it was an email-only forum. Unfortunately, Chicago-area rust is starting to take its toll on the car and it's time to think about an upgrade - while it's still running fine! I know that I will miss the easy serviceability of a car with minimal electronics (CIS injection, no ABS), and the knowledge gained from replacing almost everything at least once (heater motor, fuel pump, heater valve, etc.).
I'm considering a late-model, manual transmission 9000, but find that good ones are priced close to what one can get a 1999 9-5 for. If I ignore the obvious benefit of having a hatchback, what are some of the pros and cons of this comparison? Specifically:
a. are 9-5s more "reliable"
b. are 9-5s easier to service
c. impressions on driving the two
I hope that this will stimulate some discussion!
