I've owned both (87' 8kT 5-sp, '99 9^5 SE V6 auto).

They're very different in function and character.

The 9^5 is far more refined--the product of more than a decade's worth of advances. It has a much higher level of standard features, along with some curious deletions. It's a better city car and a better interstate car. Creature comforts like the climate control, security and audio systems are significantly improved. The headlights are significantly better. The 9^5 drivetrains are all advanced beyond the 9k's, and the T-7 system is better--it's a more comprehensive drivetrain control. We don't need to discuss the 9k's automatic or V6 issues, they've been beaten to death. The 9^5 is the safer car, taking the 9k's excellent record of passenger protection to the next level.

The 9k is a more sporting car, primarily due to its lower weight. I found it more tossable on back roads. (However, when the roads are in poor shape, the lack of IRS can be a real issue.) I prefered the 9k's seats (although the 9^5's power memory seats are nice). The 9k had a real toolkit.

There aren't all that many user servicable items on either car (I'm limiting the discussion to late model 9ks). I suppose you could poll Saab mechanics as to which they'd rather work on. All in all, the 9^5 should require less frequent service over time.

Unless I could find a *very* clean late Aero or CSE, there's no doubt that I'd get a 9^5. Need the storage of a hatch? The wagon trumps that issue. (The conquering of the 9k's body flex can't be adequately described, it has to be experienced.)
