as different cars. I have two 9000s (a '92 9000S auto, a '95 9000 Aero 5-sp) and a recent '03 9-5 Aero sedan auto.
The '92 and '95 9000 are similar, other than some improvements on the '95.
The 9K Aero and the 9-5 Aero are however quite different. I also concur with RickD and No.9's accessment. The 9-5 is a better car in almost every area.
The 9-5 is actually a bit smaller inside has fewer storage spaces. When we bought the 9-5, I tried to transfer things, such as maps, coin boxes, etc., to the 9-5, the 9-5 fell way short of usable storage bins. Those nice long bins in the doors of the 9000 have no equivalent in the 9-5.
The trunk space is about the same for both, if you opt for a 9-5 wagon, then you probably gain a bit in terms of cargo height and length.
As for "sportiness", the 9K definitely *FEELS* more sporty. This doesn't mean the 9-5 isn't. The 9-5 is actually more composed at speed, so you might think it isn't sporty enough. The 9K Aero feels quicker to me however. However, the 9-5 feels more nimble, partly because of a lighter steering and neglible torque steer. On the highway, the 9-5 wins handsdown, it is a much better cruiser than any 9K, much quieter but not floaty. Even in the city, I like the 9-5 ride as the suspension soaks up bumps better than any 9K.
My '92 has more problems than my '95 as one would expect and my 9-5 is too new for me to draw any conclusion. The 9-5 should be relatively easy to work on as the engine is any improved version of the 9K engine. The engine bay is relatively roomy with the 4-cylinder engine so it should be easy to work as well.
I don't think I would recommend a '99 9-5 as cars from that model year seem to have more trouble than later models.
I also know it's hard to find a good condition late model 9K as I was looking for one for a very long time until I decided to get a new one instead.
Hope this bit help, and good luck in your search.
