lowbar,
Here's a link to a Saab TSB stating that "synthetic oil" is factory fill as of April 2000. Since 0W-40 is the only "synthetic" listed in the document (the 5W-30 being "semi-synthetic"), the assumption is that it's the 0W-40's which is being used. Additionally, several posters (Vikingman & Dr. Boost) claim to work on the Saab assembly lines, & they have said a few times in the past that 0W-40's been factory fill for several years.
As for the M1 0W-30, that's the new recommendation for owner's use, replacing the previous "basic oil" recommendation of 5W-30 semi-syn. (U.S. OE 5W-30 was only ACEA A1 rated, while the U.S. OE 0W-30 is ACEA A5 rated. This makes it much closer to Saab's preferred ACEA A3 rating, which is carried on the 0W-40.) I don't believe 0W-30 was available at the time the TSB was issued, so that would explain its exclusion from the list. However, factory fill on these new '03 cars is still M1 0W-40.
