A 40 weight oil would flow like sap at 0 deg c. But being multiviscous, it will flow normally at that temperature. Conversely, a 0 wt oil would would flow like water at summer temperatures, but doesn't due to the top end of it's viscocity; 40 wt.
What I don't understand is why do European car makers encourage such a broad range in their multi v oil spec? Straight weight oils tend to lubricate better over a longer life, than multiviscuous oils due to the waxes and other additives that are put into the oil to allow it's fluidity to change with the temperature. It's these additives that break down first adding to the sediment and gunk that collects in the engine.
Wouldn't it be better to put a 20w-50 in during the summer and a 5w-30 for the winter. 0 weight sounds good to some people but hom many of us live where the temperature can get down to -40 degrees celsius?
