YOur question has several loose ends and needs clarification. What do you want this kit to do, and why must it be self installed versus professionally done? If you want the full capability of Saab's built in hands free capability, you need to choose a phone that has a hands free kit that supports audio mute, keypad lighting, mic and audio output, and power and ground. To the best of my knowledge, Nokia, Ericsonn,Motorola, and possibly Samsung are the only ones out there with that capability, BUT, that only applies to specific phones in each manufacturer's line.
I have used three different Nokia phones in two 9-5s now with excellent results. They are the 5000,6000, and 7000 series phones. They all have the same edge conector and work in the Nokia CARK-91 car kit. I had them installed by a professional shop that does high end car stereo installations. I have no personal interest in the DIY aspect of this, and believe that if you have to ask too many questions on how to do it, you are probably in over your head, and in the long run, would benefit from having someone else do it who has actually done it before. In cars equipped with Onstar, you need to decide if you will keep it active( meaning youwill need to buy a Triad type device), or just ditch it. The Onstar connections use the car's built in microphone and output to the speakers,so they conflict with the car kit's hookup. In any case, this applies regardless of whose phone you choose.
Good luck
