I agree with you about this on all but one point- at this point in time, while the computer may very well know engine speed, engine load, vehicle speed, pitch, yaw, you name it- what it doesn't know is that there's a hill coming up, what the road does on the other side of that curve, or even how many gears down you'll have to go to be in the right gear after the curve.
That said, if SMG were available in the 9-5 I would have that transmission. That application is phenomenal and I hope this is where technology will take us in the future. The principal difference being that I still select the gear, rather than the car deciding based on partial information. If they come up with another way for an automatic to shift manually on demand with the speed of the SMG (I suppose Audi's new tranny might fit the bill, although that thing looks like a time bomb to me) then sign me up. Until then- its MT for me.
