I'd say you are more on target with the age of the OnStar system, and less so with the data reasoning. I'm sure OnStar is taking their time to make sure they get digital right the first time, as there is quite a cost differential between replacing and/or fixing units in cars that folks will keep 5-10 years vs phones that can be swapped out or reprogrammed in minutes.
Digital cellular is much faster and more accurate for sending data. Witness the wireless internet capabilities that are only available via digital service. I am doing some really neat wireless data stuff with a microbrowser installed on my Palm and using my digital cell as a wireless modem.
Anyway, hopefully OnStar will release a digital unit soon and make all this debate moot, and make their Personal Calling more attractive. Once they have all-digital capable service, rates should go down across the board, as digital rates are much lower than analog.
