That was the point of my question, dano...
The reason I have hesitated going with the Triad...and I've talked and exchanged emails with Jim at uhltronics (great guy)...was my concern that the sound quality of the Nokia/Triad handsfree setup would not be much better than OnStar handsfree setup (which is unacceptable) ...and since I have a brand spankin' new StarTac (which I do like)...going with the Triad means buying a new phone, a new handsfree kit, and the Triad itself...total approx. $500. For that kind of money I want to be pretty sure I'm going to be satisfied! (In my perfect world, Saab would have offered an integrated dual mode analog/digital system with a detachable Star-Tac like BMW with a flat-rate subscription). But as someone said...OnStar has been around for a while and has limitations.
So what you are telling me is that, in your opinion, the Triad/Nokia handsfree setup does give better sound quality than using Onstar Personal Calling? That's good news! Are you using the built in microphone or the Nokia microphone?
I agree that OnStar Personal Calling is a poor alternative because
1) you can't take it with you and I already have too many telephone numbers.
2) the sound quality is poor...analog only, and people I call says the mic. seems to cut in and out (presume either its not doing full duplexing or noise cancellation very well).
3) there is no keypad and the voice dialing doesn't work after you connect... therefore useless for accessing voice mail systems, answering machines, voice mail systems etc.
4) the per minute rates are way too expensive...
Sooo...I bought "100 minutes good for two months" to play test it out...but in the long run I am only going to buy a minimal block of "minutes good for a year" so that other family members or friends who do not have cell phones and occasionally drive my car have something to use in urgent but not a real emergency situations.
Then, when the "free" year is up, I'll reevaluate the entire OnStar package. The driving direction thing is nice and helpful...but I've only needed it once in two months. I like the emergency features...but I seldom travel on roads where, if I did have an accident and could not call for help myself, there wouldn't be someone else right behind me that would do so. And I'm ambivalent about the stolen vehicle tracking feature. Part of me says that's a benefit. Another part of me has always told my wife "if we ever come out of a restaurant and find that the car has been stolen, we're going back inside for a nightcap so they have time to get away and sell it for parts" because family and friends have had big problems with stolen, recovered, and repaired cars in the past that made getting an insurance check look like a good alternative.
