... snow tyres have already saved my life once this winter (well, perhaps not my life - but certainly my Aero's): Merc on "all-seasons" skidded past a STOP sign and right out in front of me - I just managed to steer and brake (ABS pumping) and slip past him with a millimetre to spare. Without my Pirelli 210's both cars would have been a mess!
As Bryce says, it's a fallacy that winter tyres cost extra; you don't wear down your summer tyres while you use the winter tyres. The only extra cost is the set of wheels.
