Haven't looked much at passat's, we stayed away from it mainly because all our friends here have one, or so it seems. the 9-5 is a lot more car than the passat.
I've been helping my dad look for a volvo and was frankly surprised at how negative the comments were on the volvo bb's- people on this board absolutely adore their cars by comparison.
that said, I had to explain to him that people are definitely most likely to post when they've got a problem, so boards are skewed to the negative, and perhaps volvo owners may just be less likely to post anything until they do. anyway the volvo postings made him want a toyota, much to my mom's annoyance, and she's finally steered him back to a european marque.
Personally, I'd stick with saab if you're going to buy european. if reliability was the major feature we were after, we would've looked at a toyota instead of the 3 you listed, but we wanted to weigh in driving pleasure, comfort, style, &c.
