I just went through a comparison shop much like yours. I looked at Subaru, Passat, and (less seriously) Volvo. In the NY metro area Volvo simply could not compete in price with a 2000 Saab 9-5 wagon. (I also couldn't find ANY with manual transmission.) 2000 V70s cost low 20s and up.
Subaru had AWD, but could not come close to competing on ride, handling, fun, comfort (my previous wagon was a Subaru, so I have an affection for them). Just couldn't bring myself to get back in Subaru after driving Saab.
That left the Passat, which was MUCH cheaper than comparable Saab when new, but no where near a better value when used. It, too, was fun to drive, but lacked a certain I-don't-know-what in comparison to the 9-5. Solidity? Oomph? Also, Passats do not have a very good reputation at this point for durability, whereas the 2000 9-5 is a Consumer Reports recommended used car.
And then there's the price. Because everyone thinks Saabs spend all their time in the shop you can get a used one for very cheap for what you're getting. I paid around $15k for mine, exceptionally clean, and it does not suffer in comparison to my friend's brand new $25k Passat.
And did I mention that I love it?
