All '03-'04 9-5s with a/t get the paddle shifter. '03 on 9-3 SS models have a +/- gate to the side on the a/t models, which *might* be more intuitive for manual transmission drivers, and the 9-3 Aero (and Vector) a/t models also feature paddle shifters on the steering wheel.
The paddle shift is useful for sporty mountainous driving, letting you select a gear which puts the engine in its "sweet spot" and keeps it there over hill and dale. During the press launch of the '04 models, that's how I drove the car - except when there was someone in front to pass. Then, I set the a/t into "sport" automatic mode for quicker response. I like the analogy below about "buying a dog and then barking yourself".
