After owning the car 4 years I can say the traction control is a mixed blessing. It can prevent something bad from hapening if you do something stupid. On a snowy road, punch the gas and you go straight. w/o traction control you head off the road. Easy solution, don't punch the gas. Still, it doesen't hurt. Where it is really nice is if you are stopped and trying to get going. It will allow power to flow to the wheel with more traction. Handy when geting out of a parking space.
It does not help you keep momentum like climbing a slick hill. Once the wheels spin it chops the throttle and you loose momentum. The momentum may be your only friend to get over the slicker spots on the hill. This is one case where you will want to turn it off.
