That's interesting... You are contemplating the same two cars I thought about before going with SAAB.
I test drove, rented, test drove and rented again a Volvo V70 XC AWD wagon for some weekend trips... and I also test drove a 9-3 SE and a 9-5 wagon. It took 3 or 4 test drives in the Volvo and one short test drive in the SAAB to make up my mind. I have read about some SERIOUS quality issues at Volvo since Ford has sunk their hooks into them and besides that, I knew right away that SAAB was the car. It feels safe, handles extremely well and as previously mentioned, it is the only car I would want my family, friends or anyone else I care about to be driving.
Yes, Volvo is also safe. That is one thing they apparently have not compromised. In addition, depending on where you are living, the AWD option on the V70 may be handy. BUT, if you do your research, you'll find a history of severe engine, ignition and transmission problems in the newer models. No, not every car off the line suffers from these issues but for $40K+, you'd expect the % to be much lower than it is.
Yes, SAAB is quirky and for folks that don't know SAAB or have a history with them, getting used to that can sometimes be annoying or downright frustrating. HOWEVER, I believe that you will find that most owners, after they get the minor "bugs" worked out (SAAB is excellent about standing behind their product), are very, very happy with the reliability, safety and longevity of their vehicles.
