Thanks too Ari-
I AGREE - it's an aweful shame someone with a ElecEngr degree doesnt have a REAL multimeter!!! I'm also a tightwad! great excuse though for me to finally get a nice one. this el-cheapo pocket one is good for diagnosing open/closed circuits and that's about it!! it was a gift!! LOL! what I suspect is the 900 VR is fine and the MM is way off and that means the 9-5 voltage is really more like 9v range.

The battery did crank the car once this morning but hesitated. on second try it did not crank car. battery is currently out at PepBoys for battery check. it passed the initial 5min check.

I may try to drive it up to a PepBoys or Discount Auto where they have those diag machines that can bring out to the car which from what I remember can diag batt/alt/vreg.

I will get the car up tonight and check the wire you mentioned. ANY WAY FOR ME TO CHECK THE VOLT REG? I had a VR go bad on an old Ford and the voltage would swing wildly between 10-16v depending upon engine rpm of course. even though the MM is inaccurate, it read steady voltage, no wild swinging voltage. although, if just low volt output, could be the problem too. I hope its just VR or wire. seems like alt should be fine. never had an alt go on any Saab before.

thanks for the help gentlemen. this is a great forum!
