As you wrote, it depends on driving situations--purely city driving (Chicago or Manhattan) will yield poor mileage in almost any car.

In my driving environment (NYC & Long Island) all the cars I've driven have tended to get their EPA city estimate for gas mileage.

But in this same driving, my 9-5 5-speed is the one car I've driven that handily beats its EPA city estimate. Mine's rated 22/31 and I get about 25-26 MPG in this driving environment.

On the highway I've seen as high as 35 MPG at 70 mph but this can vary depending on the season (seasonal gasoline variation--on winter gas it's more like 31-33 MPG).

I've never had a car before that could easily beat its highway EPA estimate by such a large margin.
