They say you'll never recoup the extra cost of owning a hybrid, and I agree. I think you're better off getting something like a Civic HX or plain Corolla 5-spd for about $14K.
A $14,000 Corolla 5-spd will get 32/40 for gas mileage while a Prius (52/45) is about $20,000, so you're down $6,000 right away.
According EPA ratings, the '03 Corolla gets 35 MPG combined and the '03 Prius gets 48 MPG combined. At 12,000 mi/yr and $2/gal for regular unleaded, the Corolla will cost $685/yr for gasoline, whereas the Prius would cost $500/yr, a savings of only $185/yr.
The break-even point on the $6K is 32+ years!
This isn't even taking into account the more expensive maintenance parts (batteries) you'll have to buy for the hybrid... and the fact that the Corolla is a roomier and more comfortable car.
