His mileage for a 9-5 seems perfectly average to me. Mixed freeway/surface street driving in southern california.
Jason, your observations for 3 series seem really low. My 323i wagon (smaller engine, but also heavier than the sedan -- though probably same weight as conv.) gets 30MPG plus on long freeway trips.
Driving through california central valley averaging 90+, i stayed above 30 MPG in the 3 series.
Best ever in my 99 2.3lpt wagon was 26 on a long trip through arizona.
