I have a 99 9-5 V6.
In my opinion, the V6 timing belt tensioner pulley assembly is the weak point in the timing belt system. If the tensioner fails, destruction of the timing belt will occur causing major engine damage. Of course, this can be eliminated by changing the tensioner and timing belt simultaneously. The belt is changed at 60K.
Timing chains can also be a source of problems. I'm not sure if it's sprockets or guides. You can do a search for more info.
The only other two frequently mentioned items are sludge and DI cassetes.
The 4 gets better gas mileage than the 6.
