They wont close down saab. They leak things like that to the press to scare the workforce and politicians so that what they are really planning, i.e a scaling down of swedish production and divestiture of saab production around the world as a currency hedge and to utilize other manufacturers platforms and plants wont sound as bad. We already have the 9-2X made in japan and the 9-7x and 9-6 are to be US made. I dont see much point in moving 9-3 or 9-5 production to germany (that notable low cost country) so Trollhatten will remain in some form.

The real problem is on the management end. Saab has done wonders in the past turning hand me down chassis into something world class for a low budget, but this only gets you so far, especially with a limited model range. The profit is out there for safe premium swedish vehicles if the range is enlarged and the cars are decent - just look at volvo. It will take more than the timid half measures aproach that GM has taken so far - the efforts of clever swedish engineers notwithstanding, but instead GM has slashed the budget, disbanded the engineers and moved development in with Opel, while executing late and transparently desperate manouvers like the 9-2 and 9-7. If they want to compete with volvo or audi or BMW then they have to put in the upfront to come up with the world class product, and be ready to wait several years for the fruits, much as they have done with cadillac.
