I thought you stripped the oil drain plug, not the tranny. The tranny is NOT Helicoiled at the factory. You have two in-car options. One is a Helicoil kit (18mm)-$300 for kit, $6.00 per insert. The other is to tap it for 1/2" pipe thread and put a tapered pipe plug in. I have seen this in gearboxes I parted out. I wouldn't rebuild a trans with that case but it worked for the prior owner. The hole will be bigger than the oversize for the Helicoil kit. Good luck finding the 18 mm Helicoil kit and a BF drill for drilling out the case to receive the insert. I talked Nat at Eriksson's into loaning me the set when I discovered a trans I just finished had a stripped drain. The threads came out just like you described. I set up the case in a drill press with the differential removed. It could be done in car but I think the pipe plug will be easier. Obviously you don't want any metal left in the trans. The rubber plug thingy might be fine too until the pinion bearings fail.
