Did it start overheating after the HG was changed? You may want to have them look at the cam timing. Your description of 14 or so MPG with normal-looking spark plugs in previous posts makes me think that one of the cams may be off by a tooth. Has anybody checked the NTC sensor resistances at various temperatures. NTC sensor is located between cylinders 2 and 3 on the intake manifold flange.
And, has anybody actually checked the coolant temperature sensor (on the head, by the thermostat housing) to be sure that it's reading right?
You wouldn't want to run a Turbo engine w/o a turbo (even with N/A exh manifold) because the engine has a lower compression ratio than a N/A 16-valve engine. Turbos are worse than N/As when they're running in base boost mode with the turbo. It would be a dog.
