Hi. Have exclusively used the larger filters on my 87 8 valve. Never opened the engine in all those miles except to look at the valve clearance about 100K ago (still in spec.). Used the Mann large for first 100K, then switched to Fram PF16 for the next 100K, and have been using Bosch 3402 for most recent 115K. Have changed oil every 4 - 7 K, using Castrol 10W-30 for first 150K, then switched to Penzoil 10W-30 (which seems to flow better on colder Massachusetts mornings than the Castrol). The car burns no oil at this point and the engine sounds nice and quiet. So I guess I'm not hurting anything by going large!
