Brake Caliper Seizure Syndrome: Diagnosis & prognosis?

Greetings.
Not too long ago, my left front brake caliper seized. My mechanic slapped a new caliper on it.
This month, the right front caliper seized. I decided to try and clean it up myself to see if it was seized from grit. I cleaned it up without removing it from the car, persuaded the sliding yoke to slide again and installed new pads. Time will tell if that cured the problem. But questions come to mind. Perhaps someone might have answers handy.
What causes the brake caliper to "seize?" Does this properly refer to inhibited piston travel or an uncooperative sliding yoke? Do the caliper seal rebuild kits address the most common causes of caliper seizure, or are they primarily intended to cure leaks?
As usual, I have more questions than answers. And as usual, I will be grateful for any knowledge y'all can share.
Best wishes to all.
Jim Watts
