Well your pedal is definitely worn !!! Other folks have talked about drilling out to 3/8ths and inserting a new bushing, but I didn't feel like playing machinist and searching all over the place for new pins and bushings. Also, I had a twinge of self doubt about doing this properly. So I just a bought a new pedal from a dealership to save time and effort. They're around 40 bucks brand new.
The master cylinder should not be messy, but I wouldn't worry too much about it, unless your having major fluid leaks. I would proceed with the pedal, and see how everything feels once you have done that.
Technically speaking, you are supposed to replace self locking nuts with a new one. I didn't and I can tell you that I got that thing pretty tight so I'm not very concerned about it.
The return spring attaches to a flange that has hooks on both sides of it. One hook is for the brake pedal return spring and the other hook is for the clutch. It's sort of hard to see it, but you'll find it.
