in-car timing chain methods

When replacing my head gasket, my mechanic and I noticed the chain tensioner was out past 11mm (yes, we took it out correctly). He said the sprokets seem ok, so I'd like to slip in a timing chain w/out pulling the engine. My mechanic isn't a Saab specialist, and he wanted to know if there was enough room around the lower sproket to simply "fish" the new chain around it without needing to make the cams, flywheel, etc spin around. He said that it'd save a lot of time (thus saving money!!!). Anyone ever heard of putting the chain in this way? How much does this usually cost?
Thanks,
Nic
