I have not actually measured the chain, but I would venture to guess that this chain is a Brittish standard roller chain. A chain breaker can be purchased from any bearing house, or Grainger catalog, or McMaster-Carr catolog for about $20. You can also use a file or grinder to grind off the heads of 2 adjacent pins, to remove the outer link.
Most roll-in type chains should be provided with a spring-clip connecting link, which seats into a groove on the heads of the pin link.
There are many different chains available in the industrial world (heavier pins, thicker side plates) which would amount to less stretch, and a stronger chain. If anyone has an old chain around, I would gladly search for different options avaliable
