tranny oil is a bit of a black art. The OE fill was an engine oil 'back in the day'. Previously it was a 70w or so gear oil. Most focus on the viscosity, what really seems to matter is the additive package and most importantly the friction modifiers. You want a good quality oil that has minimal friction modifiers so that the pinion has adequate film strength and that the synchros work. THese are opposed requirements which is why this is such a black art. Racing oils generally have fewer fricton modifiers. I have not read of anyone putting a straight 40w or 50w in these yet. Some swear by RedLine MTL (manual transmission lube) others by Honda MTL and yet others by Amsoil Racing 20W50. I have used the amsoil racing 20W50 and had it in there for about 20kmi before i wrecked it. It was fine, but on very cold mornings (<30F) the first 2-5 minutes had less than stellar synchro actiion (Rrrrrink on 1-2). The '91 I just got has Redline MTL in it according to the paperwork. It is fine. I will have to see what happens this winter. I am leaning to replacing it with either Saab Synthetic Gear Lube or Honda MTL. On the other hand, the wife's 9k has Saab Synthetic in it and it is probably the best shifting Saab I have driven, but this is an apples/oranges comparison. One could assume that the synchro design is similar, but that would be an assumption.
$0.02, YMMV
