First, there's a little pin on the bottom of the shift lever. It's pulled in when you lift the reverse-lockout collar. That pin is what limits lever-travel to the right. It hits against a ridge inside the shifter box in the console. So there's one thing for you to adjust. Details & dimensions vary from year-to-year, so find the procedure for YOUR car.
It'll probably shift into fifth if you position it carefully, not ALL THE WAY to the right, since your reverse-lockout-pin is messed up. The big clue is your backup lights. The switch for those is in the shifter box in the console.
Then there's a coupling on the shift shaft, between the firewall & the tranny. The rubber part gets oily & comes apart. Maybe the clamp is loose?? There's a procedure for lining that up correctly. But this wouldn't explain the backup-light business.
There's also a bushing where this shaft exits the shift box in the console. Sloppyness can result from this bushing tearing itself up. But again, it doesn't explain the backup lights.
This is all probably unrelated to the oil swap...
