but I've changed my ways
During my driving experiences, I have owned & driven daily
73 Chevy Blazer K5, the old HUGE Blazer, 4WD, very sqirrelley on snow, hard to actually get going in one direction, great for parking on top of snow banks when Holiday shopping parking is scarce
.
1984 Jeep Scrambler, short pick-up bed, bought it new, prolly worth a fortune now, a nightmare in the snow. If 2 left wheels on snow, 2 right wheels on dry pavement, it would spin like a top, with no posi-traction on either axle. Spun at 40 MPH, spun at stop signs, great offroad vehicle

1987 Suzuki SJ410 - forerunner to the Samarai, was a black market import through Puerto Rico. This was the only vehicle I have driven that was better than a Saab in the snow. Very small & light. Was also fantastic offroad, as it would fit between the boulders the NY State Parks Dept puts to keep the 4 wheelers out.
So maybe I have helped create the demand for SUV's, but these were more Utility than sport, and were very spartan in creature comforts. Leather Interior? these didn't even have carpet, and the canvas top Jeep required you to wear an Arctic Parka while driving in winter. It was also fun to fold down the windshield in the summer to have the bugs splat in your face. I mostly detest luxury vehicles being pawned of as utility vehicles. Even old Land Rovers were very expensive, but were very plain inside, all business.
Yes, you have a better veiw of the road from up high. Yes, you might be better off in an accident because of sheer size (although I doubt safer than Saab or Volvo)You also have more chance of being in an accident, due to higher center of gravity, or rear-ended by those that can't see around you. True, they shouldn't follow that close, but that's the unwritten rules of the road ( If you leave a car's length between you & the car in front for every 10 MPH. In this area to do that, you would soon have to put your car in reverse)
When choosing a vehicle, people consider many things, putting kids in the car, carrying all their stuff, vacations, boat towing, and try to choose the most practical vehicle to cover all their needs. The sad reality is that 90- 98% of the vehicle's mileage will beput on with just the driver in the car. I'm surprised we don't all drive Winnebagos.
