I agree with you on most of this. Today I was tailgated to work by a Toyota "Highlander" (that's right, so rugged it wears a kilt) and the annoying high-beam running lights straight in the back window. Remember, when all this crap thaws you can go back to toasting them every corner you go around. My favorite motto is "don't tip over."
Or there's the fun little game I play, say you tuck in behind one (drafting of course) and then the inevitable endgame comes and they slow way down (don't tip over!) to turn in to a gas station. Then it's "Another One Bites The Pumps."
There's got to be a chunk of heaven set aside for Saab owners for driving efficient, well-engineered vehicles while others bomb down the road in a Cataract Escapade (I'm sporty!) or H2 (It's got off-road capability- let's go to the mall!) getting half the gas mileage you do. Too bad you have to die to get there (or use drugs) and that probably won't happen anytime soon because you drive a Saab and wear your seatbelt and wait for the crossing gates to go all the way up and you... don't tip over.
I work at a dealership, one that is enduring the launch of the brand new V-8 in a ute made for two years now. One comes in for service, twist the control and the info display reads "15.8 MPG AVERAGE" and I wouldn't be able to sleep at night if it was mine. It is fun, and people at work have begun to catch on, that I make bovine mooing noises when maneuvering them, of course not within earshot of customers. It's fun. The motor sounds like it's mooing, really.
The 8 valve automatic was as bad as I got and that was still 22-24. They just don't get it.
IT WEIGHS MORE. This is for folks who flunked physics. My 900 base 8 valve stops better than mom's '99 brick (ABS, same Hakkas) because it weighs 250 pounds less.
YOU DON'T NEED IT. A mid-sized estate like a V70 has way more useful cargo room than a ute and it's easier to maneuver/park and load up.
IT HAS A DRINKING PROBLEM. Sure, the exhaust coming out of my 8 valve '88 is not the cleanest, thank you Robert Bosch, but with a two liter motor I'm still exhaling a lot less. And finally,
IT WEIGHS MORE. I should stop right now or I'll be typing all night.
Buy a bicycle, ride it as much as I do, and bring on the energy crisis!
