Well, if you have this Saab engine (steel block, alum head) getting vert hot and then cooling off again...over and over beyond the "normal" range, the gasket (in this case the headgasket) will get "stressed" more because the alum and steel heatup and cool at different rates.
A few signs of a bad headgasket are oil in the coolant or coolant in the oil. Large amount of oil seeping from where the head meets the block under the exhaust manifold. And you can also run a compression check on each cylinder with the use of a compression gauge.
If your engine does not smoke white (coolant), is easy to start in the mornings, and the above signs do not exisit, then id say your gasket is doing well.
