it does sound sort of like a FrankenSAAB. The '89 and '90 US-spec non-turbos did have a crank sensor instead of a distributor-mounted hall-effect sensor, so a 2.1 to 2.0 engine swap isn't totally out in left field as far as the level effort is concerned.
It's easy enough to weld a new front flange on an old catalytic converter (I've had it done to replace a cracked flange on one of my 900s), so going from a 4-bolt to a 3-bolt flange to accommodate a different header isn't unrealistic, either.
