Always disconnect the Negative (ground) from the batt.! If you remove the positive cable, and it bumps the ground (read: almost anything metal under the hood!) you can cause damage and/or bodily harm.
I haven't had to change a 900's starter, but I would guess that removing the hood and intake plumbing would be desirable. Worst case is your intake manifold must come out (hope not, but hey!)
