The hood is 2 bolts to remove, and makes it much easier to work on that side of the engine.
I'm a relatively new DIYer, and I've learned that it is wise to always have a backup plan. In this case, if the bolts holding the starter in place were totall frozen or rounded, you might want to access them with power tools, so you might want to pull the intake manifold.
I never suggested to do it first off, but it is an option, worst case.
