I just did one on a 90 900 this past Tuesday. You can leave hood on, the only intake piping i took off was the AMM and airbox lid. Left the oil tube on it as well. Be sure to disconnect the battery terminals as smoke said.
i was able to get the passenger side bolt with a socket wrench extension and 17mm socket between the intake runners. The driverside bolt was so close to the starter, there was no room to get anything around it. Pryed back the clutch cover some, 13mm ratchet wrench and it was off. Other than that, removing the intake manifold will greatly open things up (just 3 13mm bolts and IC to TB pipe) This is only if you have a turbo as well....
